Coaching Requirements


 
OTTAWA ELITE HEAD COACH
Summary:
This position is responsible for coaching and providing direction to athletes so that they might achieve a high level of skill as well as an appreciation for discipline, sportsmanship and teamwork in basketball.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Essential duties of this position include the following. Other duties may be assigned.Instructs and demonstrates skill sets and techniques necessary for individual and team achievement in basketball.
  • Plans and sets-up activities, practices and games.
  • Ensures a certified coach is present at all basketball practices and games.
  • Develops appropriate training programs and practice schedules.
  • Ensures transportation for athletic participants.
  • Ensures hotel room reservations for all overnight events.
  • Adheres to all financial policies of the OYBA in regard to the collection and disbursement of money, expenses, and receipts.
  • Prepares practice and game schedules.
  • Maintains necessary records and completes required paperwork in a specified time and manner.
  • Ensures that proper form(s) (insurance, attendance, medical) obtained and current.
  • Ensures that all athletes are eligible, insured, have paid their fees and are in good physical condition from the beginning to the end of the season.
  • Enforces discipline policies and emphasizes sportsmanship and healthy lifestyles.
  • Supervises athletes and ensures appropriate behavior.
  • Maintains a safe environment and facilities for athletes at all times.
  • Ensures that medical and safety requirements are adhered to.
  • Submits athlete rosters to the OYBA Administrator at the start of the season.
  • Consults with OYBA Executive regarding any off-season training programs.
  • Assigns duties to all assistant coaches under his/her jurisdiction; including pre-season practice sessions.
  • Interacts thoughtfully and courteously with OYBA Executive, parents, fellow coaches, officials, players and resolves conflict in a professional manner.
  • Professionally represents the OYBA in interactions with athletes, parents, community, staff and the media.
  • Attends or delegates attendance of Assistant Coach to all League Coaches meetings.
  • Maintains appropriate certifications and training hours as required.
  • Ensures the lines of communication are well established with the team’s players and parents.

Works well with others from diverse backgrounds. Focuses on solving conflict; maintaining confidentiality; listening to others without interrupting; keeping emotions under control; remaining open to others’ ideas and contributing to building a positive team spirit. Demonstrated ability to successfully coach, lead, motivate and encourage adolescent players.ƒ
Other Skills and Abilities:
  • Demonstrated knowledge of child growth and development at each level of instruction and of the social, emotional, physical and cognitive development of adolescent athletes.
  • Demonstrated ability to participate in physically demanding athletic activities. Possesses knowledge of effective behavior management methods.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and work in a dynamic environment.​
 
 
OTTAWA ELITE ASSISTANT COACH
Summary:
This position is responsible for assisting the Head Coach as directed. Position assists with conducting practices, motivating students, and instructing athletes in game strategies and techniques; providing direction to athletes so that they might achieve a high level of skill as well as an appreciation for discipline, sportsmanship and teamwork in basketball.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Essential duties of this position include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
  • Assists the Head Basketball Coach with instructing players in the rules, regulations, equipment, and techniques of the sport.
  • Organizes and directs individual and small group practice activities/exercises as directed by the head coach.
  • Assesses player’s skills, monitors players during competition and practice, and keeps the Head Coach informed of the athletic performance.
  • Assists with determining game strategy.
  • Assists the Head Coach with supervising athletes during practices and competition.
  • Follows established procedures in the event of an athlete’s injury.
  • Models sports-like behavior and maintains appropriate conduct towards players, officials, and spectators.
  • Participates in special activities to include parent meetings, clinics, and information sessions.
  • Attends staff development meetings, clinics and other professional activities to improve coaching performance.
  • Performs any other related duties as assigned by the Head Basketball Coach.
